Lent will begin in a few days on March 5. In the Gospel reading for Ash Wednesday, Jesus tells his disciples, “Take care not to perform righteous deeds in order that people may see them; otherwise, you will have no recompense from your heavenly Father” (Matt. 6:1). But earlier in the Gospel of St. Matthew, in the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus says, “You are the light of the world. A city set on a mountain cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and then put it under a bushel basket; it is set on a lampstand, where it gives light to all in the house. Just so, your light must shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your heavenly Father” (Matt. 5:14-16).
