Don’t let Why Catholic? opportunity pass you by

Written by Catholic Times Editor

Sign-up will be beginning this weekend in parishes across the diocese for the next series of Why Catholic? meetings. If you participated in last fall's sessions, you won't want to miss the spring sessions. If you didn't participate in the first round, you might want to consider joining in this next series of Why Catholic? meetings.

Sign-up will be beginning this weekend in parishes across the diocese for the next series of Why Catholic? meetings. If you participated in last fall's sessions, you won't want to miss the spring sessions. If you didn't participate in the first round, you might want to consider joining in this next series of Why Catholic? meetings.

Last fall, more than 8,000 people in the diocese took part in the adult formation program Why Catholic?. The program is user-friendly, catechism-based and set in a small-group atmosphere that encourages openness and sharing.

Each week, Why Catholic? focuses on a particular topic. Group members prepare by reading a short selection from Scripture, as well as specific sections of the Catechism of the Catholic Church and U.S. Catechism for Adults.

Meetings open with prayer, Scripture and song. Each member has an opportunity to contribute to the discussion with questions and observations.

Many Why Catholic? groups quickly developed a special kind of solidarity. Members (this writer included) prayed together, explored the faith together and often felt compelled to put their new-found enthusiasm for the faith into action through volunteerism or charitable support of a special cause.

At the end of the first Why Catholic? cycle, group members were asked to fill out and return an evaluation. When asked what they found meaningful about the Why Catholic? experience, here is what some people responded:

  • I feel stronger in the faith. This group was wonderful!

  • I seem to pray more daily.

  • It was a good review of my faith.

Here are some other comments:

  • I didn't really want to stop meeting.

  • We plan to meet once a month for the rosary and sharing, petitions and friendship.

  • I have been asking for adult education in our parish for years. This is a great start!

The bottom line is that Why Catholic? is a terrific opportunity to learn more about the Catholic faith and, in the process, strengthen relationships in the parish family. If you have ever wished you knew more about the teaching of the church, or wished you could answer questions about your faith, then Why Catholic? is for you.

Don't miss this opportunity. Sign up this weekend at your local parish.
