“This will be the first Life Teen program in the whole Metro East area,” said Amber Haegele, who is on the Life Teen committee. She explains that Life Teen Masses are unique because they harness the power of Christian rock music to lead teens into deep, reverent prayer. Teens also have the opportunity to participate in the Mass as lectors, extraordinary ministers of Communion, ushers and band members.
Teens from both St. Mary and other Catholic parishes are welcome to attend, Haegele said. “We will have a Mass every Sunday evening at 6 p.m.,” she said. “Father Tom has been instrumental in working with us to add this Mass to his already full schedule.”
In his homilies Father Meyer — pastor of St. Mary — will target the unique spiritual needs of young people. Teens who attend the Mass will be invited to sit together in front of the church while the rest of the parish is welcome to attend the Masses to surround and support them.
Life Nights will be facilitated by 10 adult leaders, or core members, who plan an evening of fun, friendship and spiritual growth. They serve as guides to teens who are on a journey to be closer to Christ.
Steve Chapman has volunteered to serve as youth minister for the first year. Haegele said he will be working closely with core members to plan and lead the Life Nights. Nick Robinson, parish music director, has recruited musicians and has begun to organize the music and practices so the Life Teen band will be ready for Life Teen program.
Life Teen is faithful to the Magisterium of the Catholic Church, centered on the Eucharist and is consecrated to the Blessed Mother.
