The Day of Healing and Forgiveness is a confidential healing ministry for anyone who has experienced or been touched by abortion. It is sponsored by the diocesan Office for Social Concerns.
The day includes talks by post-abortive men and women and will be facilitated by a trained licensed professional therapist, psychologist Sandra Vicari of Springfield.
“Abortion is an agonizing experience for a woman, the father of the unborn child, grandparents, other family members, and friends,” said Vicari. “The temporary relief following an abortion is commonly replaced by feelings of grief and guilt which may lead into depression or anxiety.
“Some men and women re-experience the abortion in memories, in dreams, in actions and experience intense psychological distress,” she said. “In order to cope with these negative feelings, they will use defense mechanisms such as denial, avoidance, numbing, hyper-vigilance, and low self esteem.”
Vicari said the first step toward reconciliation is often the most difficult, yet simple to take.
“This day will present opportunities through nonjudgmental listening, with empathy and a compassionate outreach to move toward reconciliation — with yourself, your unborn child, your family, the church and your God,” she said. “It extends an opportunity to be more in touch and honest about one's feelings.”
