Ecumenical Taizé prayer offered during 2010

Taizé 2010, a collaborative ecumenical effort to bring Taizé prayer to the Springfield area, will involve four Catholic churches, two Lutheran churches, two Presbyterian churches, a United Methodist church and the Dominican Sisters of Springfield.

Taizé prayer comes from the ecumenical Christian monastic community of Taizé, located in the Burgundy region in France, says Madonna Jones, coordinator of Taizé 2010. The community embraces a vision of a contemplative spiritual reconciliation between various branches of Christian faith.

Taizé is primarily simple musical prayer that emphasizes the full participation of the gathered community, Jones said. “Other elements … may include proclamation, prolonged silence where we listen to the voice of God deep within, lighting of candles to emphasis the Light of Christ even though we are in near darkness, intercessory prayer which are the prayers of the people, and the Lord’s Prayer, the words Jesus gave us that we all share as Christian brothers and sisters.”
