Cathedral offers opportunity for adult confirmation

Written by

Archbishop George J. Lucas of Omaha, former bishop of the Springfield diocese, will return to Springfield shortly after Easter to celebrate confirmation at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception on Friday, April 9 at 6:30 p.m.

Father Peter Harman, pastor of Cathedral Parish, would like to extend an invitation to adults who were baptized Catholic, have received Eucharist but who have not received the sacrament of confirmation and for whom a priest ordinarily would need delegation to confirm, to join this celebration at Cathedral.

“This is an opportunity for (adult) baptized Catholics who were not confirmed for whatever reason to be confirmed now,” said Sue Coombe, coordinator of religious education at Cathedral Parish. “This is the year we have our seventh- and eighth-grade confirmation and this is something we have done in the past at Cathedral for adults. This year, Father Harman wanted to invite others to join us.

“We are offering confirmation classes at Cathedral for people in this area who want to be confirmed,” Coombe said. “We are requiring pre-registration for the classes, which will be held in three, one-hour sessions on March 11, March 16 and March 18. We assume that people from outside the Springfield area will have taken similar classes in their own areas.”

Registrants for the classes should submit a baptismal certificate, identify an appropriate sponsor (a practicing Catholic who has been confirmed) and receive the sacrament of reconciliation.

People who wish to be confirmed on April 9 should have their pastor, parochial  administrator, parish life coordinator or coordinator of religious education notify Sue Coombe by calling (217) 522-3342 or e-mailing before March 15. Please be sure to list the name of the person to be confirmed, who will be the sponsor and confirmation name. Those who wish to attend the three preparatory classes at Cathedral should call by March 5.
