SHG receives grant for safe driving campaign

Sacred Heart-Griffin High School’s Operation Teen Safe Driving (OTSD) team has been approved for the Illinois Department of Transportation: Operation Teen Safe Driving grant. The group received $2,000 to create a campaign that encourages teens to buckle up and drive safely. The campaign is called “Safely Drive to Stay Alive!”

Sponsors of the program include the Ford Motor Company, the Allstate Foundation, Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn, the Illinois Department of Transportation, Secretary of State Jesse White, RADD and the Illinois State Board of Education.

Students involved in the campaign have posted information about safe driving throughout the school to encourage students to stay safe. Every Thursday through the months of January and February, contests are held for the entire student body based on safe driving information. In addition, the OTSD group is partnering with businesses in the community to increase driving knowledge, especially regarding recently passed laws.

The OTSD group is an extension of the Friends in Resistance Education (FIRE club), which is a part of SHG’s prevention program. For more information about SHG’s prevention program and groups, contact Becca Benson, prevention coordinator at (217) 787-1595, ext. 149.
