Holy Family students earn awards at regional science fair

Holy Family students (left to right) Kim Galbraith, Emily Nelson, Thomas Hart, Josh Nelson and Ryan Glower won the highest ranking possible, an Outstanding ribbon, at the SIU-E IJAS Science Fair, March 13.GRANITE CITY — Students from Holy Family School were among the winners in the Regional Illinois Junior Academy of Science (IJAS), held March 13 at Southern Illinois University in Edwardsville. Eighth-graders Kim Galbraith, Ryan Glover, Joshua Nelson and Emily Nelson earned the highest ranking possible, an outstanding ribbon, for their science projects. Seventh-grader Thomas Hart was also awarded an outstanding ribbon for his project.

The students were competing with more than 300 other projects representing 48 schools.

In addition, Emily Nelson and Kim Galbraith were selected to take their presentations to the next level of science fair competition, the State IJAS Science Fair on May 7, at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. Emily Nelson was also picked by two groups, the U.S. Army and Southern Illinois University in Edwardsville, as having the best Life Science project at the fair. Thomas Hart was chosen by the Armed Forces Communication and Electronics Association for their first place award in the physics category.

Cindy Meredith, science teacher at Holy Family School, sponsored the students for this competition. Margaret Pennell is principal.
