Children who are born in the United States, but who have at least one parent who is from Mexico, can qualify for dual citizenship.
“Last December when we were here, we did not have the permit to offer this service, but now we do,” said Enrique Muñoz, who headed the mobile unit. There is no charge for the service, but there is a $13 charge for obtaining a copy of a person’s Mexican citizenship papers. Dual citizenship has no impact on a person’s U.S. or Mexican citizenship, but it does make travel between the two countries easier.
“We’re happy to make our parish hall available to the Mexican consulate’s mobile unit,” said Father Chris Brey, St. Alexius pastor. “It was a wonderful turnout. People were able to participate and about 70 children were able to get their dual citizenship. About 120 people were able to obtain various documents like Mexican passports.”
