Mike ScholzGLEN CARBON — With construction set to begin soon for the new Father McGivney Catholic High School in Glen Carbon, its first principal is hired. Mike Scholz, currently assistant principal at St. Thomas More Catholic High School in Champaign, will officially start his new job July 1 as principal of the new school set to open in the fall of 2011.

“We are blessed to have Mike to lead our students and faculty in McGivney’s inaugural year and into the future,” says Father Tom Meyer, chairperson, Faith Formation Committee. “Besides his impressive qualifications and experience in high school administration, Mike is dedicated to the vision and motto of our school: ‘Serving the Culture of Life.’”

Scholz grew up in Decatur, went to St. Patrick School and St. Teresa High School. He has served as principal of Mascoutah High School, associate principal and athletic director of Mt. Zion High School, coached high school baseball, and was a pitcher on the University of Illinois baseball team, when he was in college. When he was at Mascoutah, he was elected president of the Illinois Principals Association.

“I have been very fortunate in my career. I’ve been in very good schools,” says Scholz. “I’m excited about this new opportunity. There are a lot of people who have done a lot of work, and I am very impressed with their hard work. My first two priorities will be enrolling students and hiring faculty, and I can’t wait to get to work in this faith filled environment.”

Scholz and his wife were in the area Glen Carbon area looking at houses last week. “I’ve lived in three dioceses. I was raised in the Springfield diocese, then worked in the Belleville diocese, and now am in the Peoria diocese. It will be good to be back in the Springfield diocese.”
