Funeral Mass held for father of Father Harman

QUINCY — Alvin B. “Pete” Harman, age 83, of Quincy, died on Sept. 12 at Blessing Hospital. He was the father of Father Peter Harman, pastor of Cathedral Parish in Springfield.

He was born on Jan. 11, 1927 in Quincy, the son of Carl and Clara (Heine) Harman. He was a graduate of Quincy Notre Dame High School and served in the United States Navy at the end of World War II. He attended Purdue University. In 1953 he married Elizabeth Ann Terwelp in St. Boniface Catholic Church.

Mr. Harmon worked for Klingner and Associates as a professional land surveyor for over 42 years, becoming the head of the survey department until his retirement in 1993. He was a member of St. Francis Solanus Parish and was formerly a member of St. John Parish where he also served as a lector. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus. Mr. Harman volunteered for the Roman Catholic Cemetery Association and Quincy Notre Dame athletic events.

In addition to his wife, Betty, he is also survived by: four children, David Harman of Quincy, Mary Wilding of Lee’s Summit, Mo., Bob Harman of Fowler, and Father Peter Harman of Springfield; three grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one son, Joseph Harman, in infancy, and siblings, Carl Harman Jr., Dorothy Harman, Martha Howell and Mark Harman.

The funeral Mass was held Sept. 15 at St. Francis Church, with Father Harman presiding. Burial was in Calvary Cemetery, with military rites.

Memorials may be made to Quincy Notre Dame High School or St. Francis Solanus Parish.
