Knights to honor deceased members, veterans at Nov. 11 Mass at Cathedral

Written by

Knights of Columbus members from throughout the Springfield diocese will gather for a Mass at 6:30 p.m. Nov. 11 at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Springfield. Father Peter Harman, pastor of Cathedral Parish, will preside. At the Mass, Knights will remember their deceased members and also honor veterans, both living and deceased.

Gary Schmidt, a member of Holy Family Council 4179, is on the organizing committee along with Father Harman and Deacon Larry Smith from Cathedral Parish. He said the idea for an annual diocesan-wide Mass took root during the celebration of the dedication of the Immaculate Conception in December 2009.

During the dedication celebrations, Knights of Columbus members and their families were invited to a Mass Dec. 7, 2009, where the K. of C. Councils were recognized for their ongoing support of the yearlong Cathedral restoration process.

"We celebrated the rededication of the Cathedral and observed the beauty that came from the many hours of labor," Schmidt said. "At the end of that evening, the thought of making this Mass an annual affair for the Knights of Columbus came about, so here we are."

Schmidt said that since the Mass would be held on Veterans Day, Knights would use the opportunity not only to remember members who had died, as is their custom in November, but also to thank veterans for their service to their country and their church.

"It will be a thanksgiving as well as recognition," Schmidt said.

On Nov. 11, the Fourth Degree Honor Guard will assemble starting at 6 p.m. in the Atrium area. Following the celebration, a reception with refreshments will be held in the Atrium.
