Novena to Immaculate Conception begins Nov. 30

A novena to the Immaculate Conception will begin Tuesday, Nov. 30, and end on Wednesday, Dec. 8, the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, beginning each evening at 7 p.m. at Christ the King Church, 1930 Barberry Drive in Springfield. The theme of the novena will be “The Seven Sorrows of Mary.”

Each evening will begin with exposition and adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, followed by a scriptural rosary. After the speaker of the day gives the talk, the evening will conclude with Benediction.

Speakers and topics for the novena are:

  • Tuesday, Nov. 30, Bishop Thomas John Paprocki on “Mary, Cause of Our Joy.”

  • Wednesday, Dec. 1, Father David Hoefler on “The First Sorrow: The Prophecy of St. Simeon.”

  • Thursday, Dec. 2, Father Stephen Thompson on “The Second Sorrow: The Flight of Jesus into Egypt.”

  • Friday, Dec. 3, Father Bernard Tom Donovan on “The Third Sorrow: The Loss of Jesus in the Temple.”

  • Saturday, Dec. 4, Msgr. John Ossola on “The Fourth Sorrow: The Sorrowful Meeting of Jesus and Mary.”

  • Sunday, Dec. 5, Deacon David Erdmann on “The Fifth Sorrow: The Death of Jesus.”

  • Monday, Dec. 6, Father Anthony Pilli on “The Sixth Sorrow: The Piercing of the Side of Jesus and His Descent from the Cross.”

  • Tuesday, Dec. 7, Father Peter Harman on “The Seventh Sorrow, The Burial of Jesus.”

  • Wednesday, Dec. 8, after the 6:30 p.m. celebration of Mass for the holy day, the celebrant will close the novena.
