Return of the Holy Goalie: Bishop Paprocki takes to the ice

Written by

Paprocki-hockey-artBishop Thomas John Paprocki will switch from his usual clerical attire to a hockey uniform, ice skates, face mask, helmet, catching mitt, and protective pads to play goalie in a charity hockey game Monday, Dec. 6, at 7 p.m. in the Nelson Center in Springfield.

Adult hockey players from the Springfield area, each of whom has donated $100 to Catholic Charities, will make up the two teams. Bishop Paprocki, dubbed the “Holy Goalie” from his adult hockey league playing in Chicago, will alternate playing goalie for both teams.

The charity game will precede the Sacred Heart-Griffin versus Glenwood high school game. Admission is $3 for adults, $2 for students. All proceeds go to Catholic Charities.

“I’ve skated at the Nelson Center with the SHG team and with adult players. I’m looking forward to the game,” Bishop Paprocki said.

“We were pretty excited when we learned the bishop played hockey,” said Nelson Center’s manager, Mike Stratton. “It’s not often you get someone with such a high profile — ‘The Holy Goalie’ — come out here. That is pretty awesome.”
