Program on climate change to be offered

A program on “Climate Change and Our Catholic Faith: Church Teachings and Our Response” will be offered at various locations throughout the diocese as a late winter/early spring opportunity. Dan DiLeo, project manager of the Catholic Coalition on Climate Change, and members of Pax Christi Springfield will facilitate.

The program will address climate change and Catholic teaching and offer practical suggestions on ways Catholics can respond to the changing climate personally and as a faith community through prayer, education, assessment, action, and advocacy around Catholic values and commitments.

In his 2010 World Day of Peace message, If You Want Peace, Protect Creation, Pope Benedict XVI called the Catholic faithful to act responsibly and prayerfully making decisions that impact creation.

“The environment must be seen as God’s gift to all people, and the use we make of it entails a shared responsibility for all humanity, especially the poor and future generations,” he said.

Programs are open to the public and are scheduled on:

  • Feb. 26 at St. Agnes, Springfield, from 2:30-4 p.m.;

  • March 5 at the Newman Catholic Center in Charleston, from 2-3:30 p.m.;

  • March 12 at St. Jerome, Troy, from 2:30-4 p.m.; and

  • April 9 at St. Peter, Quincy, from 3:30-5 p.m.

In addition to Pax Christi, Springfield, other sponsors include the Office for Social Concerns of the Diocese of Springfield in Illinois, Hospital Sisters of St. Francis and Dominican Sisters of Springfield.
