HSHS names new president, CEO

Mary Starmann-HarrisonMary Starmann-Harrison has been named new president and chief executive officer of Hospital Sisters Health System according to a Feb. 11 announcement by Sister Jomary Trstensky, OSF, chair of the members of Hospital Sisters Health System. Starmann-Harrison currently serves as regional president and CEO of SSM Health Care of Wisconsin, which operates St. Mary’s Hospital in Madison, and St. Clare Hospital & Health Services in Baraboo, among other health care facilities in south central Wisconsin.

“Mary is a recognized leader with outstanding experience in Catholic health care,” said Sister Mary Ann Minor, OSF, chair of the HSHS Board of Directors. “I am confident that under her leadership, we will deepen our commitment to Catholic health care. With the latest technology and modern best practices, we will continue our legacy of providing quality care while respecting the individual dignity of each person.”

Starmann-Harrison began her career in 1979 as a registered nurse in the emergency department and has served in health care management since 1980. She previously served as a CEO for Tenet Physician Services where she was responsible for the management of approximately 300 physician practices in the western region of the United States. Prior to that, she held various leadership roles, including CEO, for St. Luke’s Medical Center in Phoenix, Ariz.

Starmann-Harrison is Catholic and is a Fellow of the American College of Health Care Executives. She and her husband Greg have two children, a son Greg (G.B.), and a daughter Stephanie.

Larry Schumacher will continue to serve as the interim HSHS president and CEO until Starmann-Harrison joins HSHS and then he will resume his role as chief operating officer for HSHS.
