St. John’s College to offer basic parish nursing course

To prepare more nurses to serve those in a variety of faith traditions, St. John’s College, Department of Continuing Education, will host a Basic Parish Nursing class Thursdays through Saturdays, June 9–11 and 23–25. The course will be held at the Chiara Center on the grounds of the motherhouse of the Hospital Sisters of St. Francis near Springfield.

Designed for registered nurses currently working in parish nursing or interested in becoming a parish nurse, the course is in affiliation with the International Parish Nurse Resource Center. Participants who complete the course earn 38 continuing education contact hours.

Parish nurses do not provide direct medical care, but serve as a resource in their church congregation.

“Through education and support, parish nurses make a difference in the faith communities where they serve,” said Brenda Jeffers, RN, Ph.D., chancellor of St. John’s College. “Parish nursing is one of many innovative programs the college offers to prepare nurses to meet health needs in an integrated health care system.”

The Hospital Sisters Health System-Illinois Hospitals (Continuing Education Council) is an approved provider of continuing nursing education by the Illinois Nurses Association, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.
