Music study day on Roman Missal offered to music, choir directors

The Diocesan Office for Worship and the Catechumenate and the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception are sponsoring a study day on the new English translation of the Roman Missal for music and choir directors from parishes, schools and other Catholic institutions. The study day will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, June 18, in the atrium of the Cathedral in Springfield.

The presenter will be Charles Gardner, director of liturgical music and executive director for Spiritual Life and Worship for the Archdiocese of Indianapolis.

The new Roman Missal, Third Edition is the product of more than a decade of collaboration among bishops of English-speaking countries. It contains the prayers and instructions for the celebration of the Mass. The new translation will include many new prayers for various occasions and many updated translations of existing prayers, including some of the well-known responses and acclamations of the people.

It will be implemented in parishes throughout the United States on the First Sunday of Advent, Nov. 27, 2011.

Eliot Kapitan, director of the diocesan Office for Worship and the Catechumenate, said that the new translation will require new or adapted musical Mass settings for parishes.

"This study day is for music and choir directors who are the ones who will be tasked with choosing music for their assemblies," Kapitan said.

Individual registration for the study day is $25 per person until noon on June 7, when $10 will be added. After June 15, cancellations will be charged $10.

Mail name, address, phone number, e-mail address and parish to: Office for Worship and the Catechumenate, PO Box 3187, Springfield, IL 62708. Make check payable to: Diocese of Springfield in Illinois.
