Bishop Paprocki runs Marquette 5K in Alton

Mike Keenan, race co-director, is shown with Bishop Thomas John Paprocki who received a medal for being “the first bishop to get through the finish line” at the May 14 5K fun run and walk at Marquette Catholic High School in Alton.ALTON — “Can you beat the bishop?”

That was the challenge given to the students and participants of the fourth annual Marquette Catholic High School 5K fun run and walk on May 14.

Andy Schranck and Tami Cardenas took the challenge and did just that — they beat Bishop Thomas John Paprocki, who participated in the run. Schranck also beat everyone else with a time of 19:41

“I just had a pretty good day,” said Schranck who is a 2008 graduate of Marquette and a junior at Missouri University of Science and Technology. Cardenas (an eighth-grader at St. Mary in Alton) beat all the other women who ran the race with a time of 21:55.

Almost 230 runners and walkers participated this year and Bishop Paprocki won the medal for the first bishop to get through the finish line. He awarded all winners with their medals at the assembly after the race.

The senior class of 2012 set up the course and served as marshals during the race. Proceeds from the Marquette 5K will go to their senior mission trip.
