For instance, when the priest says: "The Lord be with you," the people's response to his greeting will be: "And with your spirit" instead of the familiar "And also with you."
Other prayers, such as the Gloria, the Confiteor and the Creed will also have some changes that may require some getting used to.
To help in the transition, over 60,000 "Diocesan People's Mass Parts Pew Cards" have been printed and distributed by the diocesan Office for Worship and the Catechumenate, according to director Eliot Kapitan.
"The pew cards were made available this past Wednesday (Sept. 21) at the Priests Convocation," Kapitan said. "The cards were pre-sorted into deanery groupings and organized so that pastors could take home with them enough cards for their parishes."
The annual Priests Convocation for the Springfield diocese was held Sept. 19-22 at the Northfield Center in Springfield.
Kapitan said the simple, four-page pew card is printed on card stock paper and sized to fit easily in the most popular hymnals and worship aids.
A large-print version of the pew card, along with other resources to use in preparation for the new missal is available through the Office for Worship and the Catechumenate at (217) 698-8500, ext. 166.
Providing the pew cards to parishes in the diocese was made possible by gifts from various Knights of Columbus councils and other generous donors.
