Funeral Mass held for father of Father Molloy

ALTON — Joseph J. Molloy, father of Father Joseph Molloy of the Springfield diocese, died March 6 at Rosewood Care Center. He was 89 years old.

He was born on Nov. 2, 1922 in Alton, son of the late James and Nettie (Schmidt) Molloy. On Feb. 19, 1949, he married Lucia Zerwas at Ss. Peter and Paul Church in Alton. She survives.

He was a 1940 graduate of Marquette High School and a veteran of World War II. He was employed at Tri-City Grocery Co., Granite City, for 41 years, and also at Hansen Packing Co. in Jerseyville for five years. After retirement he worked part-time at Rolling Hills Golf Course for 18 years. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed the surroundings and good times there with fellow workers and golfers.

He was a lifetime member of the Alton Knights of Columbus Council 460. He was on the St. Patrick Cemetery Board, and was an active member and trustee of St. Ambrose Parish, where he was a extraordinary minister of holy Communion and for many years took Communion to the homebound.

In addition to his wife, surviving are one son, Father Joseph M. Molloy, pastor of Holy Family Catholic Church in Decatur; one sister, Marlene Furgason of New Orleans; nieces, nephews, and many friends.

He was preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters.

The funeral Mass was March 10 St. Ambrose Church, Godfrey, with Father Molloy presiding. Burial was in St. Patrick Cemetery in Godfrey.
