Local Catholic Daughters make contribution in honor of late member

As Court Madonna Catholic Daughters of the Americas nears the close of a year-long celebration commemorating its 100 year existence in Springfield, the court sent a centennial donation to the CDA national headquarters Growing Tree in recognition of Mary Frances Lavin.

Lavin, who passed away June 10, 2010, was a member, regent, and active participant in CDA at the local, state and national levels.

Court Madonna was chartered June 11, 1911. Its members come from all parishes in the city and surrounding communities.

At a May 17 meeting, new officers were elected. They are: Della Santos, regent; Lois Jirgal, vice-regent; Andrea Mikels, recording secretary; Maria Hamlin, financial secretary; and Gloria Cobau, treasurer. Father Robert Jallas is chaplain.

Court Madonna members also made centennial contributions to eight Springfield schools — Blessed Sacrament, Cathedral, Christ the King, Little Flower, St. Agnes, St. Aloysius, St. Joseph, and St. Patrick — "in gratitude for the ongoing Catholic community support, and for the parochial schools of the city which are responsible for the education and nurturing of our greatest Catholic treasure: our children and grandchildren."
