Franciscan sisters celebrate professions, welcome novices

dl-martyrs-st-george-coALTON — On Aug. 15, the Solemnity of the Assumption of Our Lady, the Sisters of St. Francis of the Martyr St. George will celebrate 13 sisters making their final profession of vows, three novices making their first profession of vows, and the reception of two postulants into the novitiate, at Mass at St. Mary Church in Alton. Bishop Thomas John Paprocki will be the main celebrant at the 8:30 a.m. Mass, with other bishops and priests as concelebrants.

Making their final profession are: Sister M. Mercedes Diaz, daughter of Maria Reina Diaz and the late Manuel Maria Diaz of Perth Amboy, N.J.; Sister M. Christiana Lanuzga, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Eduardo Lanuzga of New Port Richey, Fla.; Sister M. Ignatia Cooney, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Joseph Cooney Jr. of Clay Center, Neb.; Sister Mary George Brown, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Donald Brown of Perryville, Mo.; Sister M. Andrea Goeckner, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Delmer Goeckner of Cottonwood, Idaho; Sister M. Vianney Ebben, daughter of Denis Ebben of Greenville, Wis., and Vicky Ebben-Svitavsky of Neenah, Wis.; Sister Mary David Tappan, daughter of Margaret Tappan and the late Frank Tappan of Bethalto; Sister M. Clementia Toalson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Carey Toalson of Hannibal, Mo.; Sister Mary Jude Marsella, daughter of Col. and Mrs. Nicholas R. Marsella of Yorktown, Va.; Sister M. Bridget Martin, daughter of Joseph Martin of Barnhart, Mo., and Ellen Martin of Sullivan, Mo.; Sister Mary Gianna Nazar, daughter of Lawrence Nazar of Powell River, B.C., and Eileen Nazar of Sauk Rapids, Minn.; Sister M. Catherine Welter, daughter of Carl Welter, and the late Audrey Welter of St. Michael, Minn.; and Sister M. Teresa Pandl, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Pandl of Waukesha, Wis.

Novices making their first profession are: Sister M. Lucy Gantt, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Douglas Gantt of West Richland, Wash.; Sister Karol Marie Baumgarten, daughter of Judith Baumgarten and the late Peter Baumgarten of Spencer, Wis.; and Sister Cordia Marie McKenzie, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William McKenzie of St. Louis.

Postulants received into the novitiate and given new religious names are: Lauren P. Kissel (Sister M. Gemma), daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Kissel of Edgewood, Ky., and Marilis A. Pineiro (Sister M. Immanuela), daughter of Gil Valenzuela and Erilieta A. Pineiro of Bergenfield, NJ.

A reception for the sisters will be held from 2 to 4:30 p.m. in Suddes Hall, next to St. Mary's Church, 525 E. 4th Street.
