Funeral Mass held for Deacon Maurer

Maurer-BillTROY — Deacon William J. Maurer, 69, who served at St. Jerome Parish, died July 15 at Barnes Jewish Hospital in St. Louis.

He was born on Dec. 29, 1942 in Chicago and was the long-time development director for Southern Illinois University Edwardsville School of Pharmacy.

He was ordained to the diaconate on April 28, 1996, in the Archdiocese of Chicago and served until 2003 at Infant Jesus of Prague Parish in Flossmor. In 2003, he incardinated to the diocese of Springfield and assigned to St. Jerome.

He is survived by his wife; Marcia (Schicht) Maurer, whom he married on Dec. 19, 1970 in Riverdale; son, Christopher (Rinko) Maurer of Chicago; brother, Charles "Bud" (MaryLou) Maurer of Washington state; sister, Ruth (Lou) Jurewicz of Philadelphia, Pa., and numerous nieces, nephews and extended family members and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; Charles and Cecilia (Kessler) Maurer; and four sisters, Mary Maurer, Charlene Bieschke, Dolores Barber, Therese Maurer.

The funeral Mass was held July 19 at St. Jerome Church, with Father Pat Jakel officiating. Burial was at St. John the Baptist Black Jack Cemetery.

Memorials are suggested to the American Heart Association.

Irwin Chapel, Glen Carbon, was in charge of arrangements.
