Sister re-elected to highest office of Franciscan community

dl-sr-sherry-murphy-coMUENSTER, Germany — Sister Sherrey Murphy, OSF, has been re-elected general superior of the Hospital Sisters of St. Francis during the General Chapter of Elections on Sept. 14 in Muenster. Since 1994, Sister Sherrey has served in Germany, 12 years as a general councilor and the past six years as general superior. The General Chapter is the highest decision-making body of the congregation and meets every six years to elect the general leadership and set the direction for the congregation for the future.

Sister Sherrey is a member of the American Province of the Hospital Sisters of St. Francis. She was born in Mitchell, S.D., on June 15, 1942. She professed first vows with the Hospital Sisters in 1968. She is a registered nurse and is a graduate of St. Joseph Mercy School of Nursing, Sioux City, Iowa. She received a bachelor's degree in nursing from Marillac College, St. Louis, and a master's degree in administration from the University of Notre Dame.

Sister Sherry served her religious community at St. Vincent Hospital (Green Bay, Wis.) in the Neurosurgical Department; as a staff nurse, a department supervisor and nursing administration at St. John's Hospital (Springfield); and as the assistant administrator at St. Mary's Hospital (Decatur). In addition, she held administrative positions at St. Francis Convent (Springfield) including motherhouse administrator and vocation directress and assistant director of formation.

The Hospital Sisters of St. Francis is an international congregation of Franciscan Sisters founded in Germany in 1844. Their provinces/regions include Germany, Poland, USA, Japan, and India. The American Province, based in Springfield, was founded in 1875 when sisters from Germany arrived and began a healthcare ministry. They sponsor Hospital Sisters Health System and its 13 hospitals throughout Illinois and Wisconsin, a mission in Tanzania, service in Haiti, Hospital Sisters Mission Outreach, and Chiara Center.
