Funeral held for mother of Msgr. Kuse

QUINCY — Shirley Marie Kuse of Quincy, mother of Msgr. Michael Kuse of the Springfield diocese, of Quincy died Feb. 23. She was 94.

She was born Jan. 23, 1919, in Quincy, the daughter of August and Bertha (Loher) Schmidt. She married Maurice R. Kuse on Nov. 30, 1940 and he preceded her in death on Aug. 31, 2006.

Mrs. Kuse was a 1937 graduate of Quincy Senior High School and was a member of Blessed Sacrament Parish in Quincy. She was a former long-time member of the St. Elizabeth Society at St. Boniface Church and was a volunteer for the former St. Mary Hospital Auxiliary and the Blessing Hospital Auxiliary. She was also a member of the Council of Catholic Women.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by five brothers, Floyd and Virgil Schmidt in infancy, and Merle, Bob and Donald Schmidt.

Surviving are two sons, Msgr. Kuse, pastor of Blessed Sacrament Parish and dean of the Quincy Deanery, and Gregory Kuse of Quincy; two granddaughters; six great-grandchildren; a sister, Betty Sipek of Pittsfield; a sister-in-law, Jacqueline Schmidt of Quincy; several nieces and nephews.

The funeral Mass was held Feb. 28 at Blessed Sacrament Church. Burial was in Calvary Cemetery, Quincy.

Memorials may be made to Blessed Sacrament Parish.
