The classes, which focus on the insights of Carl Anderson and Father Jose Granados, DCJM, in their book Called to Love: Approaching John Paul II's Theology of the Body, will be held at the Christ the King Parish Center (1930 Barberry Drive in Springfield) beginning at 6:30 p.m. There is no charge for the two-hour workshops and refreshments will be served.
Theology of the Body was Pope John Paul II's integrated vision of the human person — body, soul and spirit. Sister M. Maximilia, who is vice chancellor for the Springfield diocese, says she believes Anderson and Father Granados have an important way of helping people understand what can be a somewhat intimidating subject.
"Both Carlos and I were very much influenced by John Paul's vision of love and the book does a wonderful job of laying it down," says Sister M. Maximilia. "Carl Anderson and Father Granados tap the wealth of John Paul's teaching in a way that doesn't sacrifice its depth — that's what I appreciate about the book."
The class is open to everyone, but married couples in particular will benefit from the sessions, says Tejeda, who is director of the Office for Marriage and Family Life.
"During the Year of Faith the hope would be that people would be re-invigorated or energized by this — being touched by the Gospels," he says.
"The content of the book has resonated with me in my life," Tejeda says. "The presentation of the Gospel speaks very directly to the challenges that have risen since the sexual revolution in Western culture."
"So much has happened in the courts (in regard to marriage) that I think this seminar will also serve in the defense of marriage (as a sacrament between a man and a woman)," Sister M. Maximilia says.
"This is something that also affects the next generation (of Catholics)," she says. "We're hopeful that this endeavor will plant the seed of a renewed awareness of God's love and man's dignity. I think it will be a good experience for people."
