Sacred Heart-Griffin High School students recently participated in the Science Olympiad competition at the University of Illinois Champaign and came back to Springfield having placed as a team as well as having earned several individual medals.
SHG competed against 21 other schools in the Class A division in the high school event. The team took an overall third place in that competition.
Individual medals were earned in the following events by the following students: Anatomy and Physiology — first place by Kim Orlando and Alexandra Lamtyugina; Astronomy — fourth place by Alexandra Lamtyugina and Meredith McClain; Designer Genes — first place by Alexandra Lamtyugina and Meredith McClain; Thermodynamics — fourth place by Sean Wesp, Allyson Ihlenfeldt and Glen McClain; Elastic Launch Glider — fourth place by Nick Heisler and Andrew Koehler; Gravity Vehicle — second place by Louis Connelly and Brian Connelly; and Robot Arm — first place by Louis Connelly and Brian Connelly.
The team is coached by SHG science teachers Donna Brayfield and John Allison.
Science Olympiad is the premiere science competition in the nation, providing rigorous, standards-based challenges to 6,800 teams in 50 states.
