First Friends of Newman Center evening set in Charleston

CHARLESTON—The Eastern Illinois University Newman Catholic Center will hold the first Friends of Newman Night on Nov. 2. The event is planned to recognize the Newman Center that, over the years, has been a second home to EIU's Catholic students.

"It furnishes a spiritual oasis, a welcoming community, and abundant opportunities for students to serve both locally and globally," organizers of Friends of Newman Night point out in mailers sent to alumni, parents, and community supporters.

The celebration includes a buffet dinner at 7 p.m., and dancing at 8 p.m. Alumni, parents, faculty and any and all friends of the Newman Center are cordially invited to attend. Childcare will be available.

A raffle will be held, and winners need not be present to win.

The Newman Center offers celebration of Mass and the sacraments, a vibrant social life, and volunteer programs such as alternative spring break, the Newman Knights of Columbus, Hedwig House, afterschool tutoring programs and the Haiti Connection. Although the center receives support from the Springfield diocese, additional contributions have become necessary to meet service obligations.

To reserve tickets or for more information, call the Newman Center at (217) 348-0188. Email .
