Students from Catholic schools among winners of poster/essay contest

QUINCY — Winners of the 2014 Right to Life of Adams County poster and essay contest recently received their prizes following the annual Right to Life Memorial Walk. The awards ceremony marked the 31st anniversary of the poster contest in Quincy. The contest was open to students in grades 3-8 and was based on the theme "The Righteous Choice — Life for All."

Cash prizes were awarded to the first-, second- and third-place contest winners in each of the three age brackets, and to the top three essay contest winners. In addition, 12 students' posters and three students' essays received honorable mentions.

Poster contest winners from Catholic schools and parishes were:

Third-fourth grade division: Laikyn Sutton, Blessed Sacrament School, second place; and Haylie Easley, St. Mary School, Mt. Sterling, third place.

Fifth-sixth grade division: Clayton Schenk, St. Mary School, first place; Layne Frericks, St. Peter School, Quincy, second place; and Ella Terwelp, Blessed Sacrament School, third place.

Seventh-eighth grade division: Katelyn Barfield, St. Mary School, first place; Marissa Cowan, St. Mary School, second place; and Carolyn Dickerman, Blessed Sacrament School, third place.

The seventh-eighth grade essay contest winners were: Callie Mock, St. Francis School, first place; Autumn Sturhahn, St. Peter School, second place; and Molly Penn, St. Francis School, third place.

Honorable mentions were awarded to: St. Peter School students Jack Brown, Tori Felde, Angela Huber, Konner Schuckman and Paige Willer; Blessed Sacrament School students Kannon Dickerman, Jack Dust, Katie Schuecking and Lola VanWinkle; St. Francis School students Ryan Cafun, Savannah Real and Chevi Veile; and from St. Thomas in Camp Point PSR, Tony Obert.

Nearly 500 students from seven schools and churches submitted posters for the preliminary judging, with 70 posters advancing to the area-wide final competition. Posters were on display in the Quincy Mall until Jan. 26 and will remain in the Right to Life Resource Center Window at 109 N. Eighth St., throughout February and most of March.
