He was born Dec. 25, 1925, the son of Robert A. and Catherine Dunlavy Simpson. He was ordained May 31, 1952, at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Springfield.
After his ordination, Father Simpson served as assistant pastor at Cathedral Parish in Springfield (1952-1956); Ss. Peter and Paul in Alton (1956-1960); St. Mary in Quincy (1960-1964); and St. Francis Xavier in Jerseyville (1964-1966). He was pastor of St. Luke in Virginia (1966-1968); Our Lady, Queen of Peace in Bethalto (1968-1971); and St. Mary in Edwardsville (1971-1993). After retirement from pastoral ministry in 1993, he served as hospice pastor for Cass-Schuyler Hospice Service until 2007.
Preceding him in death were his parents; David, his infant brother; and Robert, his brother.
He is survived by his sister, Eileen (Frank) Muriello of Oak Park; sister-in-law, Lulie Simpson of Grand Rapids, Mich.; many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
A funeral Mass was concelebrated Jan. 24 at St. Luke Church in Virginia.
Memorials are suggested to Walker Nursing Home, Cass-Schuyler Area Hospice or Masses.
