A Timothy Retreat is inspired by St. Paul the Apostle who wrote to his young protégé in 1 Tim: 4:12: “Let no man show contempt for your youth, but be an example to all in your speech, conduct, love, purity and faith.”
At the retreat, 10 high school and college-age Catholic youth mentor the younger students, sharing their understanding of how faith affects their lives and conduct. In small groups, students discuss what they are learning and participate in various activities.
The retreat also includes an opportunity to receive the sacrament of reconciliation and participate in the celebration of Mass. Area pastors were also present to interact with the “young church,” including Fathers Dennis Kollross, Tom Meyer, Hyland Smith, Dean Probst, Brian Alford, and Raphael Paul DeMoreno.
John Barrett, youth minister from St. John Vianney Parish in Sherman, said, “The amazing part of this retreat for me is watching the leaders of the young church, using their leadership skills to help build the faith of the younger kids, and at the same time growing in their own understanding of their faith.
“It is a great blessing for me to be able to watch what God can do with the young people of our world when they are unfettered and allowed to utilize the skills that they are blessed with,” he said.
