Olympian talks to fourth-graders

Written by

QUINCY — St. Francis Solanus School fourth-graders recently had the opportunity to meet and talk with Olympic legend Jackie Joyner-Kersee, whom Sports Illustrated for Women recently named “Greatest Female Athlete of the 20th Century.” During her Olympic career, she won three gold, one silver and two bronze medals in the heptathlon and long jump events.

yp-or-dl-olympianJoyner-Kersee’s visit to the school was the last session of a seven-week program offered by Quincy Medical Group that brought in guest speakers to give presentations during PE class to encourage healthy eating, generosity, good driving habits, recycling, reading, finding spirit and physical activity.

“I signed my class up for the program, and it was well received, even before Jackie’s visit,” said Vicky Mitchel, St. Francis fourth-grade teacher. “The speakers’ topics are diverse, but share a common goal — to help students recognize the power that they have to improve their own lives and the lives of others.”

At the last session, “Jackie sat on the gym floor with the kids and talked to them about always trying their best. She is a wonderful example for all the students at St. Francis,” Mitchel said.
