Benjamin Coggeshall, the son of Robin and Claudia Coggeshall of St. Thomas Parish in Camp Point, was ordained to the Catholic priesthood for the Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest. Canon Coggeshall was ordained by Cardinal Raymond Leo Burke, prefect of the Supreme Tribunal of the Apostolic Signatura.
The liturgy took place Aug. 5 at St. Francis De Sales Oratory in St. Louis, with 1,200 in attendance. Among them were Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone of San Francisco, Archbishop Robert Finn of Kansas City, Auxiliary Bishop Joseph N. Perry of Chicago and Prior General of the Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest Msgr. Gilles Wach.
Canon Coggeshall graduated from Central High School in 2000 and then from the University of Illinois at Champaign in 2004 with a bachelor's of science in architectural studies. In 2006 he entered the Institute's seminary located outside of Florence, Italy.
Canon Coggeshall's first solemn Mass of Thanksgiving was celebrated on Aug. 9 at St. Rose of Lima Church in Quincy. Canon Matthew Talarico preached in honor of the occasion, and Father Arnaud Devillers, pastor, and members of the local Catholic clergy were in attendance, along with about 150 others. The liturgy was served by Institute of Christ the King priests and seminarians. Musical accompaniments were provided by Institute seminarians and members of St. Frances de Sales Oratory in St. Louis.
The Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest is a society of apostolic life of Pontifical Right whose goal is the sanctification of priests in the service of the church and souls. It has apostolates in the United States, Ireland, England, Spain, France, Germany, Switzerland, Sweden, Belgium, Italy and Gabon in Africa.
Canon Coggeshall returned to the seminary at the end of August for the Institute's yearly chapter meeting. His assignment at this time is Limerick, Ireland.
