SHIPMAN — Religious items and furnishings from the Ursuline convent and chapel in Alton will be auctioned at 5 p.m. Tuesday, March 10, at Harman Auction Service and Storage in Shipman.
Items to be auctioned include religious statues, paintings and figurines; oak church pews; antique furniture including many chairs, tables, sofas and a bed; large and small crucifixes; pianos; candelabra; and many miscellaneous items. The Ursulines arrived in Alton in 1859 to teach. They helped open and staffed numerous parish schools in Alton and surrounding areas. They built the convent at 845 Danforth St. in 1926. In 2014 the Ursuline Sisters closed the Alton convent and adjoining Queen of Peace health care center. The sisters who lived there are now living in communities in Alton, New Orleans, and Eureka, Mo. There currently are 13 Ursulines living in Alton.
