Father Eugene J. Weitzel, CSV, a priest of the Viatorian community, died April 30 in Rushville at age 88.
He was born March 5, 1927, in Chicago, the son of Frank and Frances Julia Quinn Weitzel. He graduated in 1945 from Cathedral Boys High School in Springfield. Father Weitzel pronounced his first vows with the Clerics of St. Viator in 1951 and was ordained to the priesthood in 1959.
He earned a bachelor's degree in philosophy from St. Joseph College in Rensselaer, Ind., a master's degree in education from DePaul University in Chicago and a doctorate in sacred theology from Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C.
Father Weitzel taught at Griffin High School in Springfield from 1959-1971. He served as chaplain at St. John's Hospital in Springfield from 1971-1989, when he became pastor of St. Alexius Church in Beardstown. In 2006 he retired but continued to serve at the parish until 2011. He was instrumental in the development of St. Anne's Residence in Beardstown, St. Francis Clinic and assisted in opening a youth center in Beardstown. He had a wide array of interests including cars, medicine and a deep love for animals.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Frank Weitzel.
He is survived by one brother, Harold (Theresa) Weitzel of Springfield; two nieces and one nephew.
A memorial Mass was held on May 12 at St. Alexius Church in Beardstown. Interment was at Calvary Cemetery in Springfield.
