Sister Lillian Marie Brown of the Hospital Sisters of St. Francis died on June 17 at St. Francis Convent in Springfield. She was 92 years old.
Sister Lillian Marie was born in Denver on June 30, 1922, the daughter of Edward and Lilly Morgan Brown. She entered the congregation on Sept. 8, 1953, and professed her religious vows on Oct. 4, 1956.
Sister Lillian Marie served the community at St. Mary's Hospital in Streator; St. Vincent Hospital in Green Bay, Wis.; and St. Francis Convent in Springfield, in housekeeping and refectory ministry from 1956 to 1968. In 1968, she served as a nurse aide and licensed practical nurse at St. John's Hospital in Springfield. In 1972, she returned to the motherhouse to care for the sisters in Loretto Home as an LPN on the night shift.
Due to failing vision, she relinquished her LPN duties and continued to care for her sisters as a nurse aide until 1992 when she assisted the laundry staff in the St. Francis Convent laundry. In 2003, Sister Lillian Marie assumed the ministry of prayer and continued volunteering in the laundry until she was no longer able.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three brothers: Edward, Michael, and John Brown; and three sisters: Joyce Rouse, Betty Thompson and Ann Lease.
She is survived by one brother, Patrick (Karen) Brown of Coulee City, Wash.; a brother-in-law, Fred Thompson, of Filmore, Calif.; several nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews; and her Franciscan sisters with whom she shared her life for over 61 years.
The funeral Mass and Rite of Christian Burial was celebrated by Father Andre Schludecker, OFM, on June 20 at St. Clare of Assisi Adoration Chapel at St. Francis Convent. Burial was in Crucifixion Hill Cemetery.
