This special award is given annually since 2008 on behalf of the American Football Coaches Foundation (AFCF) and the Randy Walker family to recognize an Illinois high school football coach who has served as a role model and life mentor for youth both on and off of the field.

Randy Walker was an American football player and coach. He played fullback for the Miami University RedHawks from 1973-1975, served as head coach for the RedHawks from 1990-1998 and coached for the Northwestern Wildcats from 1999 until his death in 2006. He was a role model and leader in his professional and personal life, and the award named for him was started for coaches who exemplify the same winning characteristics.

Leonard has been the head football coach at SHG since 1984. The SHG Cyclones won state championship five times under his coaching, most recently in 2014.

Randy Walker's wife, Tammy, presented Leonard with the award at a dinner reception following the annual AFCF Randy Walker Power of Influence Golf Outing, held June 22 at the Ivanhoe Club in Ivanhoe. Urban Meyer, head coach for Ohio State University (2014 NCAA Football National Champs), was keynote speaker for the event.
