Funeral Mass held for Father Gierut

Father Casimir F. Gierut, retired priest of the Springfield diocese, died Oct. 17 at Manor Care of Hinsdale, age 88.

He was born Feb. 25, 1919, in Chicago, son of the late John and Catherine Gierut. He was ordained to the priesthood on April 17, 1949.

Father Gierut was assistant pastor at St. Patrick in Alton, 1949-1954; St. Agnes in Hillsboro, 1954; St. Anthony in Effingham, 1954; and Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Springfield, 1954-1959. He was pastor at St. Mary, Bunker Hill, and Holy Cross, Wilsonville, from 1959 until his retirement in 1989.

Father Gierut is survived by a brother, Alexander Gierut of LaGrange, and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his other siblings, Andrew, Julia Pozesky, Frank, Father Joseph, Rudolph and Leon.

The funeral Mass was held Oct. 20 at St. Francis Xavier Church in La Grange. Burial was in Resurrection Cemetery in Justice.

Hallowell & James Funeral Home, Countryside, was in charge of arrangements.
