Father John C. Sullivan, OFM, died in home hospice care at the Franciscan Motherhouse in Springfield on Nov. 7. He was 84 years old.
He was born Aug. 25, 1932 in St. Louis, the son of John C. and Florence (Bene) Sullivan.
Father John was a member of the Franciscan Province of the Sacred Heart, St. Louis. He entered the Franciscan Order in 1952 and was ordained to the priesthood in 1959. After ordination, he studied mathematics and physics at Catholic University and Notre Dame, and taught physics and electronics for 10 years at Padua Franciscan High School in Parma, Ohio.
Following teaching, Father John was in parish ministry for 18 years, serving parishes in Quincy, Indianapolis, St. Louis and in Calhoun County. He served his order as vicar provincial from 1987-1993 with a short period of time as interim provincial minister in 1991. Father John served as a spiritual assistant for the Secular Franciscans for over 15 years.
His hobbies included oil painting and wood-burning art.
Father John was preceded in death by his parents and this year by his older brother, Raymond Sullivan, in late June.
He is survived by two sisters in the St. Louis area: Sister Charline Sullivan, CSJ, and Audrey Sullivan; several nieces; one nephew; several great-nieces and great-nephews; aunts; cousins and friends.
A wake service was held at the Franciscan Motherhouse, and a visitation and a funeral Mass were at St. Anthony of Padua Church in St. Louis. Burial was in Ss. Peter and Paul Cemetery in St. Louis.
Staab Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
