On Sunday, March 2, there will be an open house from noon to 2 p.m. at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Springfield. The open house is being held in conjunction with Bishop George J. Lucas' recently announced plan to begin the restoration of the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception this autumn.

"While temporary fittings were made following the liturgical renewal of the Second Vatican Council, there have never been any significant adaptations to the church itself," said Father Peter Harman, pastor of Cathedral Parish. Plans for the restoration include a new permanent altar and pulpit, as well as a new entrance and gathering space from Fifth Street.  

Proposed plans for the restoration as well as items of historical significance surrounding the cathedral's 1928 dedication will be on display at the open house. Architects from Graham & Hyde Architects as well as members of the restoration committee will be on hand to answer questions about the upcoming project.

Visitors to the cathedral will be able to preview just how much the restoration will brighten up the church's interior. "A small section of the interior has been cleaned and repainted in recent weeks to show the potential for a brighter and cleaner interior," said Father Harman. "Bishop Lucas and I are stressing that the work will be that of a renewal - to update, brighten and improve upon the rich architectural style of the cathedral."

The public is invited to attend this open house. The cathedral is located on the corner of Sixth and Lawrence.
