The Quincy area community is invited to take part in the Lent Street Retreat on Saturday, March 15. The event is sponsored by Quincy University Campus Ministry.
A street retreat is when everyday people are "homeless" for a day. Participants will gather at the QU Campus Ministry house (20th and Chestnut streets) at 10:45 a.m. From there, they will bus or walk to Eighth and Jersey streets. At 3 p.m. participants will walk to the Living Room (Eighth and Adams streets), where supper will be served at 4 p.m. and reflection will take place at 5 p.m.
While moving through the day, people will be asked to walk with a consciousness about attitudes, judgments, fears, assumptions, etc. about who is in the streets and why some people are homeless in the United States. Adults go by themselves and youth are shadowed by an adult who previously has made a retreat. Lunch will be served at the Salvation Army dinning room. To prepare for the Street Retreat, men are asked to not shave for two days and dress down on the day of the event. Women are asked to dress down and not wear jewelry or carry a purse.
