GRANITE CITY - Nine college students have received $500 or $1,000 scholarships from St. Elizabeth Parish through an endowment in honor of the late Laurine Reiske. They are: Edward Gensert, Meagan Joyce, Sarah Kromray, Lauren Mooshegian, Susan Ratkewitz, Lauren Riggs, and Mark, Mary and Michael Ryan
The awards were made Aug. 31 at the 10:30 a.m. Mass at the parish.
In the name of his wife, Laurine, John Reiske bequeathed St. Elizabeth Parish a $162,000 gift for the purpose of endowments to offset the cost of college education for parishioners. Only the interest earned from the endowed gift can be used for this purpose.
The requirements for receiving such a gift are that the applicant must be a practicing Catholic, must have graduated from St. Elizabeth School, must have a proven financial need and must have excelled academically. The gift is to be used for books, tuition, housing, gas or other college expenses. Also, the recipients are expected to continue their practice of faith.
