Pax Christi Springfield will sponsor the screening of Don't Call Me a Saint at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 18, at Lincoln Library, 325 S. Seventh St. in Springfield.
The film is the story of Catholic social activist Dorothy Day. Beginning at the height of the Depression with Day's introduction to the French peasant philosopher, Peter Maurin, the story includes interviews with those who knew her. Through their commitment to Catholic social teaching, Day and Maurin created the Catholic Worker social justice movement. The movement lives on in over 180 Houses of Hospitality and soup kitchens around the world and its socially critical newspaper still sells for a penny a copy.
Day's commitment to justice and peace led to several arrests for civil disobedience and to a life dedicated to helping the hungry and the homeless. In 1980 she died of heart failure at Maryhouse, a home she founded for the homeless women of New York City .
