Effingham hospital recalls tragedy, rebuilding

St. Anthony’s Heart Care Services is the newest addition to St. Anthony’s Memorial Hospital’s facility in Effingham. Opened in April 2008, the building serves as home to St. Anthony’s Heart Care Services, including Prairie Heart Institutes of Illinois, Pain Management Services, Sleep Studies and enhancements to the hospital’s Surgical Services. "We approach this event with both humbleness and pride as we mark the 60th anniversary of the tragic St. Anthony Hospital fire of 1949 and the 55th anniversary of St. Anthony's Memorial Hospital, and the great good that has come from the mutual support and commitment of the Hospital Sisters and the people from in and around the Effingham area," said Dan Wood, president and CEO of St. Anthony's Memorial Hospital, before the event.

The “Caledonia,” a 1937 fire truck used to fight the tragic 1949 fire at St. Anthony Hospital in Effingham, will be on display at the “Reflections of Our Past” anniversary celebration at St. Anthony’s Memorial Hospital. The fire truck was fully restored in 2005 by Effingham Volunteer Firefighters.The “Caledonia,” a 1937 fire truck used to fight the tragic 1949 fire at St. Anthony Hospital in Effingham, will be on display at the “Reflections of Our Past” anniversary celebration at St. Anthony’s Memorial Hospital. The fire truck was fully restored in 2005 by Effingham Volunteer Firefighters.Activities were to include a re-broadcast of the WCIA-TV's series Legacy of Lives Lost at 1, 2 and 3 p.m.; a presentation of the film, The Fire, by Teutopolis High School student Joe Buhnerkempe, at 1:30, 2:30 and 3:30 p.m.; and viewing historical displays, including the restored 1949 fire truck "Caledonia" used to battle the fire.

The Effingham County Genealogical and Historical Fire Book was to be available for purchase at the celebration.
