The deacon candidates of the Class of 2012 were seated with their families on the center aisle of the church. They were called into the sanctuary and instituted one by one.
According to the Ceremonial of Bishops, “The reader is appointed for a function proper to him, that of reading the word of God in the liturgical assembly. Accordingly, he is to proclaim the readings from Sacred Scripture, except for the Gospel reading in the Mass and other celebrations. ...”
“Instituted readers (who are always men) are in a different place than blessed readers and only a bishop can institute these men,” said Eliot Kapitan, director of the diocesan Office for Worship and the Catechumenate. “In this diocese, only men who are going on to Holy Orders are instituted as readers.”

Cramer, Blessed Sacrament, Quincy; Robert F. Crosby, St. Jerome, Troy; James R. Hill, Ss. Peter and Paul, Collinsville; Leland B. Johns, St. Michael the Archangel, Staunton; Paul E. Koch, Holy Family, Mt. Sterling; Robert M. Lundberg, Blessed Sacrament, Quincy; John H. Murphy, St. Boniface, Edwardsville; Gregory W. Parquette, Blessed Sacrament, Springfield; James M. Schwartzkopf, St. Mary, Alton; Charles E. Theivagt, St. Michael, Greenfield; Eugene Uptmor, Immaculate Conception, Shelbyville; and Thomas Wilkinson Sr., Ss. Peter and Paul, Alton.
