Diocesan fund provides $89,000 in tuition assistance

Endowment comes from Harvest of Thanks, Springtime of Hope campaign

The Diocese of Springfield in Illinois has provided over $89,000 in tuition assistance to 297 students in Catholic elementary and high schools this year, Jean Johnson, superintendent for Catholic schools, has announced.

Student aid is part of an endowment created with contributions to the Harvest of Thanks, Springtime of Hope campaign, held in conjunction with the diocese’s sesquicentennial celebration in 2003. Funds go to Catholic students whose families might not otherwise be able to send their children to a Catholic school.

“The assistance is especially important this year during these challenging economic times,” said Johnson. “It helps students remain in a Catholic education setting where faith is integrated throughout the curriculum.”

Each of the 42 elementary schools in the diocese received an average of $1,712. The six Catholic high schools each received $2,850. Individual schools decide how funds are distributed.

Tuition assistance makes a real difference for some families, Johnson said.

“Parents are grateful and relieved that funds are available to assist them in reaching their dreams for their children,” said Peg Bodinet, principal at St. Mary’s School in Edwardsville. “More than monetary support, it is also the support of a church that sees the needs of her people and finds a way to provide for the educational and spiritual nourishment of her children.”
