Diocesan Catholic Committee on Scouting receives national recognition

Scouts and the adults who support them gathered on the afternoon of May 2 for the annual Scout Mass at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Springfield. Especially invited were all Scouts who earned religious awards during the past year.

During the ceremony, the diocesan Catholic Committee on Scouting was presented with the 2009 Quality Diocese Award. To qualify for the award, the committee documented activities that covered a range of areas including leadership training for adults, spiritual activities for Scouts, and an active plan for promoting the religious programs for both Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts.

“This is the first time the Catholic Committee on Scouting for the Diocese of Springfield in Illinois has earned this award from the National Catholic Committee on Scouting,” said Kyle Holtgrave, associate director for Youth and Young Adult Ministry and chairman of the Catholic Committee on Scouting. “All of us on the committee are excited to be recognized for creating a great program for Scouts in the diocese. We join a select group across the country.”

The Quality Diocese Award was presented to 106 Arch/Diocesan Committees in 2008.

In addition to the 2009 Quality Diocese Award, the Catholic Committee on Scouting also earned the 2009 Award for Excellence from the National Catholic Committee on Scouting for the Fall Scout Retreat program. Alan Tarlo, chairman for the National Catholic Committee on Scouting’s Award for Excellence committee said, “This accomplishment reflects the commitment to provide quality Catholic Scouting in your diocese.”
