Obituary - Sister Mary Odilo Brinker, SSND

obit-sr-Mary-Odilo-Brinker-SSND-coST. LOUIS — Sister Mary Odilo Brinker, SSND, died Aug. 21, at Northwest HealthCare Center in Florissant, Mo. She was 93 and a former convent "house sister" and community service volunteer.

The funeral Mass was held Aug. 27 in the School Sisters of Notre Dame Theresa Center chapel in south St. Louis County. Burial was in the Sancta Maria in Ripa cemetery.

Sister Mary Odilo was born in Washington, Mo. She entered the congregation of the School Sisters of Notre Dame in 1939 from St. Francis Borgia Parish in Washington. She professed first vows in 1942 and final vows in 1948. She celebrated her 70th jubilee as a School Sister of Notre Dame this year.

For 53 years, Sister Mary Odilo served the community in the kitchen or school cafeteria and with laundry, gardening and general housekeeping. In Illinois, she was missioned to St. Mary, Alton; St. Francis, Aviston; Notre Dame High School, Quincy; and the Academy of Notre Dame, Belleville. In Missouri, she served at St. Boniface, Koeltztown; St. Charles Borromeo, St. Charles; and St. Mary, Cape Girardeau. She also served at St. Mary of the Pines, Chatawa, Miss.

For 28 of those 53 years, she was missioned to Villa Gesu, the former SSND retirement center, serving in the kitchen and dining room, helping to strip furniture, assisting with crafts in the occupational therapy department, and working outside in the garden and yard. She often kept vigil at the bedside of the sick and dying sisters.

She is survived by two sisters, Olga Kreienkamp of Kirkwood, Mo., and Margaret Shade of Jefferson City, Mo.; and four brothers, Orville, Odilo, Henry and Leonard, all from Washington, Mo.
