Springfield Dominican Sister Janet Marie Pfile, OP, died peacefully on July 7, at Sacred Heart Convent in the 60th year of her religious profession. She was born in Decatur, in 1941, to William H. and Violanta (Vi) Kocher Pfile. She joined the Dominicans in 1959 and professed her vows in 1961 at Sacred Heart Convent in Springfield.
Sister Janet Marie, who for a time was known as Sister Maria del Rey, was an elementary school teacher and principal. She taught in Chicago and Duluth, Minn., and was both teacher and principal at schools in East Moline, New Berlin, Hampshire, and Cary. Sister Janet Marie was also a full-time principal in Quincy. She briefly taught math at Rosary High School, Aurora, then began ministry as a pastoral associate, dedicating 12 years to the parishioners at St. James Parish, Rockford and 14 years at Holy Family Parish, Decatur, until recently.
In preparation for the celebration of her 60th profession anniversary, Sister Janet Marie wrote that her call to Dominican life was nurtured by God and the blessing of the “faith-filled people who have journeyed with me.”
She was preceded in death by her parents. Sister Janet Marie is survived by her sisters, Sister Judith Pfile, OP, at Sacred Heart Convent and Donna (Stu) Sorensen of Round Rock, Texas; brother, Larry (Pat) Pfile of Kirkwood, Mo.; and her loving aunt, cousins, nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, and many dear friends.
A visitation and funeral Mass were held July 12, at Sacred Heart Convent Chapel. Father Joseph Molloy, Father David Beauvais, and Dominican Father Michael DeTemple were concelebrants. Burial was on July 13, at Calvary Cemetery.

Springfield Dominican Sister M. Loyola Miller, OP, died peacefully July 11, at Sacred Heart Convent in Springfield. She was born in Morris, in 1946 to Raymond and Salena (Hanley) Miller, who named her Nancy Carol. She joined the Dominicans in 1964 and professed her vows in 1966 at Sacred Heart Convent.
Sister M. Loyola was a life-long educator. At every stage of her ministerial life she cared for the growth and faith formation of young people. For eight years she taught elementary students at schools in Springfield and Aurora, and in San Diego, Calif. She taught religion and science for nine years at Marian Catholic High School, Chicago Heights, then at Routt Catholic High School, Jacksonville. She later returned to Jacksonville as DRE at Our Saviour Parish and as a part-time high school teacher. At Rosary High School, Aurora, she taught for seven years, then worked in the finance office for six years. When she returned to Springfield in 2009 it was to serve as treasurer at Sacred Heart Convent and offer support for the vocation office, performing both duties with selfless care and joy even as her health declined.
Sister M. Loyola was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her siblings: Anne Foster (Roger, deceased) of Kinsman, Marilyn (Raymond) Zeimet of Seneca, S.C., Madonna Updike (David, deceased) of Ottawa, Eileen Scott of Morris, George (Sherry, deceased) Miller of Morris, Lee (Laurie) Miller of Verona, and Sharon (Tom) Kimes of Morris; and many loving nephews, nieces, cousins, and dear friends.
A prayer service, visitation and funeral Mass were held at Sacred Heart Convent on July 15, with Father Michael DeTemple, OP, celebrant. Burial was on July 16, at Roselawn Memorial Park.

Springfield Dominican Sister Mary Albrecht, OP, also known as Sister M. Henrica, died peacefully on May 5, at Sacred Heart Convent. She was born in Carrollton, in 1929 to Henry J. and Edith E. Langer Albrecht and baptized Mary Christina. She joined the Dominicans in 1947 and professed her vows in 1949 at Sacred Heart Convent in Springfield.
Springfield Dominican Sister M. Ruthanne Huss, OP, died peacefully on May 3, at St. John’s Hospital. She was born in Aurora in 1933, to Francis J. and Ruth (Raboine) Huss and baptized Frances Jane. She joined the Dominicans in 1954 and professed her vows in 1956 at Sacred Heart Convent in Springfield.
Sister Anne Therese Mayol, OSU, died peacefully on May 1, at St. Andrew’s at Francis Place in Eureka, Mo. A Springfield native, she served many years in the Diocese of Springfield in Illinois.
Born on Oct. 7, 1933, to Alexander and Gertrude Link Mayol, she entered the Ursuline community in 1953 and professed her vows in 1956. She earned a bachelor’s degree in biology from The College of New Rochelle in New York, and a master’s degree in secondary school guidance and counseling from The College of St. Thomas in Minnesota.
ST. LOUIS — Sister Mary Ellen Neeves, OSU, died peacefully April 13 at St. Andrew’s at Francis Place in Eureka, Mo. Also known as Sister Philip Marie, she served many years in the Springfield diocese.
She was born Dec. 11, 1938, in Bloomington to William Vernon and Mildred Knecht Neeves and grew up in Pana. A later move to Decatur brought her into contact with the Ursuline Sisters, and she entered the Ursuline community in 1956, professing her vows in 1959. She earned a bachelor’s degree from the College of New Rochelle in New York and a master’s degree from Providence College in Rhode Island.
ALTON — Sister Joan Ann Springman, OSU, died peacefully April 18 at St. Agnes Home in Kirkwood, Mo. An Alton native, she served many years in the Diocese of Springfield in Illinois.
She was born on Feb. 24, 1934, at her home in Alton, the youngest of eight children of Joseph J. and Elizabeth (Valerius) Springman. She entered the Ursulines in July 1953 and professed her vows in January 1956, becoming known as Mother Mary Immaculata. She wanted to be a religious from the time she was in the second grade.
Sister Owen Marie McArdle, OSF, of the Hospital Sisters of St. Francis died on April 8 at St. Francis Convent in Springfield. She was 86 years old.
Sister Owen Marie, the former Barbara Maureen McArdle, was born in Cleveland, Ohio, on April 19, 1934, the daughter of Francis and Barbara Reulbach McArdle. She entered the congregation on Sept. 8, 1953 and professed her religious vows on June 13, 1956.
Sister Joan Winkler, OSF, of the Hospital Sisters of St. Francis died on Feb. 14, at St. Francis Convent, Springfield. She was 86 years old.
Sister Joan was born in Breese, on Sept. 25, 1934, the daughter of Raymond and Anna Margaret Cope Winkler. She entered the congregation on Feb. 2, 1951 and professed her religious vows on Oct. 4, 1953.
Brother Joel Marc Rousseau, FFSC, died on Feb. 20, at the Franciscan Brothers of the Holy Cross at St. James Monastery in Springfield.
The former Dean LaVerne Rousseau was born on June 28, 1954 in Cavalier, N.D., to the late James and Gertrude (Boyer) Rousseau. He was the eighth of nine children, being the fourth son. Dean grew up in Walhalla, N.D., where he attended St. Boniface School and graduated from Walhalla High School in 1972. He attended the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks before entering the Franciscan Brothers of the Holy Cross in the summer of 1977. He was invested with the habit of the congregation on Sept. 1, 1977 at St. Anthony’s Novitiate in Riverton. He made his first vows on Jan. 24, 1979 — making his final vows on Jan. 21, 1984.
Springfield Dominican Sister Regina Marie Bernet, OP, died suddenly, Jan. 14, at Sacred Heart Convent. She was born in Springfield in 1934 to Albert and Jennie (Otto) Bernet and baptized Marilyn Ann. She joined the Dominicans in 1954 and professed her vows in 1955 at Sacred Heart Convent in Springfield.
EVANSVILLE, IND. — Sister Bernadette (baptized Mary Bernadette) Forquer died on Nov. 29, at Seton Residence in Evansville, Ind. Sister Bernadette was born on Feb. 1, 1933 in Santa Monica, Calif., and was one of two children of William J. and Dorothy (Dahle) Forquer. She graduated from Bishop County High School in Los Angeles, and entered the Daughters of Charity in St. Louis, in 1952.
ST. LOUIS — Sister Marianne Mullen, OSU, died peacefully Nov. 13 at St. Andrew’s at Francis Place in Eureka, Mo. She served many years in the Diocese of Springfield in Illinois.
Also known as Sister Marie Michelle, she was born July 3, 1934, in St. Louis to Walter J. and Lillian Kramer Mullen. A graduate of Ursuline Academy in Kirkwood, Mo., she entered the Ursuline Sisters in 1956 and professed her vows in 1958.
Springfield Dominican Sister M. Melanie Roetker, OP, died peacefully on Nov. 16, at Sacred Heart Convent in Springfield.
She was born in Mattoon in 1942 to Harold C. and Elsie (Knollenberg) Roetker and baptized Mary Melanie. She joined the Dominicans in 1960 and professed her vows in 1962 at Sacred Heart Convent in Springfield.
Springfield Dominican Sister Marie André Dougherty, OP, died on Oct. 28 at HSHS St. John’s Hospital in Springfield.
She was born in Jerseyville in 1943 to William and Florence (Beiermann) Dougherty and baptized Agnes Marie. She joined the Dominicans in 1964 and professed her vows in 1966 at Sacred Heart Convent in Springfield.
URBANA — Springfield Dominican Sister M. Sara Koch, OP, died suddenly on Oct. 18, in Urbana.
She was born in Mt. Sterling in 1940 to Raymond and Marie (Redmond) Koch, and baptized Marcia Sue at St. Mary Church, Mt. Sterling. She joined the Dominicans in 1959 and professed her vows in 1961 at Sacred Heart Convent in Springfield.
Sister Charlotte Gaughan, a School Sister of Notre Dame and retired educator, died peacefully on June 15 at age 94.
Born in Pana, she met the School Sisters of Notre Dame in high school and following graduation, she entered the candidature at Sancta Maria in Ripa in St. Louis in 1944. She was received into the novitiate in 1946 and given the name Mary Carol Therese. She pronounced her first vows in 1947 and final vows in 1953. She returned to her baptismal name in 1970.
Springfield Dominican Sister Margaret Therese Hebert, OP, died Oct. 6 at Sacred Heart Convent in Springfield. She was born in Pana in 1952, to Noel and Mary Louis (Fullerton) Hebert, and baptized Margaret Louise at St. Patrick Church. She joined the Dominicans in 1973 and professed her vows in 1976 at Sacred Heart Convent.
Springfield Dominican Sister M. Dominic Joerger, OP, died Oct. 9 at Sacred Heart Convent, in Springfield. She was born in Mendota, in 1924, to Lawrence and Julia (Jones) Joerger, and baptized Mary Ann at Holy Cross Parish in Mendota. She joined the Dominicans in 1943 and professed her vows in 1945 at Sacred Heart Convent.
ST. LOUIS — Sister Francis Marie Thrailkill, OSU, died peacefully Oct. 2 at Our Lady of Wisdom Healthcare Center in New Orleans. She was a former president of Springfield College in Illinois.
The daughter of Franklin and Mary Myrtle Huggins Thrailkill, she was born Barbara Ann Thrailkill on Sept. 21, 1937, in San Antonio, Texas. She graduated from Ursuline Academy in San Antonio and entered the Ursuline Sisters in 1955, making her vows in 1958.
